The author Barbara Kingsolver and her family decided to go on a year long local/sustainable diet. In other words, they only ate food that was produced in their local area or what they grew themselves. They ate NO fast food. This meant that the food they ate had not been shipped from faraway states or countries, which uses tons of fuel and contributes greatly to air pollution. To accomplish this yourself, buy from farmer's markets, buy food in season, and buy organic. As a result of this experiment she wrote the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle which is available at Barnes and Noble or Why not try a similar experiment, even if only for a month?
