Our local farmers market is now open and I was thrilled to find a vendor this year who makes raw sauerkraut and other fermented foods. Fermented foods contain probiotics, the microflora that helps your body build a strong immune system.
Unfortunately we live in a world that tends to destroy the “friendly bacteria” which can lead to problems with your digestive tract. Some of those destroyers may surprise you:
Antacids and medications that lower stomach acid
Most animal products (animals are given antibiotics to keep them alive until slaughter which then goes into the person’s body who is eating the animal and destroys friendly bacteria
Drinking lots of pure water protects good bacteria, and a high quality dose of Vitamin D3 does as well. And eating fermented foods come into this mix because they’re full of probiotics and will support building a healthy immune system and a strong digestive tract.
This sauerkraut recipe is one of my favorites so I hope you enjoy it.
