Superfruits: Apples and Pears Might Help You Lose Weight

No, I am not talking about body shape. I’m talking about the actual fruits, apples and pears. They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. And do they say something about pears? I don’t know… Anyway, apples and pears are definitely two of my all time favorite fruits. Not only are they tasty, but they are easily portable because you can just toss them in your bag and go. (Some other very tasty fruits are less durable and pre-portion sized). I also love to use apples and pears to add sweet flavor to my green smoothies .
I have written before that fruit might actually promote weight loss and should be considered part of healthy weight loss efforts. Well, then I was writing about a study that was talking about the goodness of all fruit, but now I am writing about studies that found that apples and pears specifically can be good for your waist line.
First, the NHANES found that apple eaters have smaller waistlines with less belly fat, lower blood pressure, and a 27% lower chance of being diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. They also had significantly reduced C-reactive protein (CRP) levels; high CRP is linked to heart disease ( 1 ). Second, researchers in Brazil put two groups of overweight women on almost identical diets. The only difference was that one group ate about three small pears a day; the other had oat cookies with the same number of calories. The result: The fruit eaters lost more weight ( 2 ).
There you have it: even more reasons to eat fruits, especially if you want to lose weight in a healthy way. So how do you guys like to eat your fruit? Are you a grab and go type or smoothie fiend like me?
