Thyme, is one of my favorite herbs to use when it comes to roasting things. I use it in so many different dishes, both savory & sweet. But who knew it had a few health benefits in addition to being such a deliciously flavorful plant?
In the early 1800s, ancient Italian cities like Rome or Greece thought of thyme to represent courage and bravery. They added it to their meats and wines, and used it to give their homes a wonderful fragrance. Though they are tiny, they are also large in numbers an make a great nectar-producing flower for honey bees. They range in color, shape, size, and can grow just about anywhere you can think of!
The oils in thyme that aren’t used for cooking are used in hygiene products like soap, toothpaste, or mouthwash due to it’s ability to fight off bacteria and infections. But we’re here for the food over here! If you simmer a bit of thyme in some hot water, it can make a tea that can fight off colds and coughs. For the best bet, simmer it for about 10 minutes and then strain it. Drink this 3-4 times a day until a few days after the cough is gone.
Great for the winter season! But my favorite use for thyme is to flavor citrus sweet potatoes!
Roasted Citrus Thyme Sweet Potatoes
3 large sweet potatoes
1 tsp. fresh thyme
2 tbsp. olive oil
Zest of 1 orange
Juice of 1 orange
Pinch black pepper
-Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
-Cut the sweet potatoes into ¼ inch slices and arrange them in a casserole dish (they are allowed to overlap).
-Drizzle the olive oil over them. Then add the rest of your ingredients.
-Bake for 35-40 minutes or until fork tender.
I actually made this dish for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it! It was sweet and flavorful, with that delicious thyme bringing everything together.
So next time you are at the grocery store, be sure not to over-look this deliciously healthy herb. It might just bring out the flavors of your next dish!
