Superfoods Spicy Hot Chocolate

Posted Feb 14 2013 1:22am

I’m a chocolate loving woman! Dark chocolate is the one I adore and its rich flavor delivers pure satisfaction! I enjoy using dark chocolate in many of my sweet and savory recipes. One of my favorite recipes using dark chocolate is hot chocolate.

Hot chocolate is just one of those ultra creamy chocolate drinks that always bring a smile to everyone’s face. No matter how you’re day is going drinking a cup of hot chocolate makes you feel better. I love curling up in a warm blanket, slowly savoring a cup of steaming hot chocolate that warms my insides and comforts my soul. Whenever I drink hot chocolate it brings fond memories of my mom making a pot for my family.

My mom’s homemade recipe included dark cocoa powder, brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon mixed into a blend of whole milk and heavy cream. She topped this hot chocolate with a dollop of fresh whipped cream which took it to another level! This scrumptious hot drink completely captivated my heart. I looked forward to cold days because I know when the weather was chilly my mom would whip up a batch of her famous hot chocolate.

Now, when the weather gets cold in California which normally is only in the winter, I make a cup or two of luxurious hot chocolate. Some of my favorite kitchen adventures involve experimenting with different milks, creams, spices, and sweeteners to create unique combinations of hot chocolate goodness!

Since eating foods and beverages that promote vibrant health is of key importance to me, I upped the nutritional benefits in my recipe by coming up with a superfoods spicy hot chocolate that provides fantastic taste and healing nutrients at the same time.
This creamy superfoods spicy hot chocolate delivers subtle heat, warming spices, and rich chocolate flavor with every sip. I used the combination of a dark chocolate bar with cocoa powder to really intensify the deep chocolate flavor which results in a delicious taste that true chocolate lovers will adore!

I used coconut milk mixed with coconut cream so the recipe could be dairy-free since I’m not drinking dairy to prepare my body for doing my 5 day healing whole foods detox cleanse . If you can’t find coconut cream you can use all full-fat coconut milk. If you do drink dairy you can use a blend of organic milk and heavy cream or all milk if you want a less creamy, light hot chocolate.

If you want the hot chocolate to be totally decadent, you can use some of the coconut cream mixed with stevia to make whipped cream to go on top of the chocolate.

Spices are renowned for their health benefits so including them in this recipe was essential. The intoxicating flavors and aromas of chocolate, cinnamon, ginger, and vanilla, are a fabulous match when paired with the subtle heat from the cayenne and black pepper.

Hot Chocolate ingredients 021

Cayenne pepper is the fruit from a tropical plant called the capsicum annuum longum. Cayenne has a high amount of vitamin C and carotenes. Cayenne is also rich in capsaicin which releases endorphins into your body along with acting as a potent pain reliever and fat burner.

Black Peppercorns

Black peppercorns are rich in antioxidants. Black peppercorns contain piperine a compound which has been shown to have a thermogenic fat burning effect on the body as well as an aid to detoxify the liver. Piperine also helps increase the absorption of key nutrients like B vitamins and beta-carotene.

Vanilla adds a warm floral note to this hot chocolate. Pure vanilla extract is a good source of antioxidants which protect our body from free radical damage.

Ginger is a potassium-rich rhizome which is excellent for stimulating digestion and bile flow, relieving nausea, and protecting our bodies from inflammation.

Cinnamon is a warming spice high in antioxidants and healing nutrients. It contains rich amounts of iron and calcium. Cinnamon provides the added benefit of blood sugar regulation and aiding digestion.

I hope that enjoying my delectable superfoods spicy hot chocolate brings a smile to your face and warmth to your body. Please share this recipe with someone you love so they can reap the benefits too.
