Super Healthy Kids has gone through several changes over the last few years, and this is the best one yet!
I started blogging on Super Healthy Kids in the fall of 2007! (first post) The photos of my food were horrendous, but I wanted a place to share ideas with parents on easy ways to feed their kids healthy food like fruits and vegetables.
In 2008 I launched the first Healthy Kids Plate , to give parents a tool to teach their kids what a balanced meal should look like, specifically that half their plate should be fruits and vegetables. It took about 3 years to sell the first 2000 plates!
In 2011 I redesigned the plate after the USDA came out with the new Choose MyPlate icon and suddenly, sold 2000 the first week!
In 2012, I brought on my neighbor Natalie , who is a registered dietitian, to start blogging with me, and we launched a meal planning website to help parents prepare healthy food at home, with fruits and veggies that were in season and easy to prepare.
Throughout this time there was one common thread, which we finally added to our tagline:
Making Fruits and Vegetables Simple, Fun, and Delicious!
The blog posts, the plate, and the meal plans all centered on our desire to help families eat more fruits and veggies. This new web design was intended to help you do that by giving you ideas that are easy to find and hopefully have the least amount of resistance from your kids. My favorite page on the entire new site, which we are going to improve and add to continuously, is our ! Each vegetable, although right now just has a few recipes under it, will soon have it's nutrition data, preparation ideas, storage, growing, etc.
I also love our new recipe index , because rather than sorted by time, it's sorted alphabetically! Which is awesome until you find all the blog posts that we gave really lame titles to, and then it's hard to find what you are looking for. (but we also have a site wide search bar for that!)
Then, for those folks that had signed up for our meal planning service that we had on another website, it's all right here in one place now . So, the recipe index is for ALL the recipes if you are logged in, not just the blog posts! And when you are on recipe pages, you can always see the current meal plans in the left navigation.
And.. there you have it! Now that we are on a new platform for blogging, it's going to be so much easier to add features that will make this a place where you can find ideas to help your kids eat more fruits and vegetables! We have to thank everyone who helped get this site together and have worked constantly for the past 5 months: Luna Webs for building an amazing platform and Tech4Moms for being our tech liason when we didn't know what they heck they were talking about! They are both so talented and know their tech stuff!
