Sunflower Power Smoothie

Posted Dec 02 2011 12:00am
Good Morning and Happy Friday!

I hope everyone is having a good day so far.  I am full of energy this morning and am really looking forward to the weekend.  So I mentioned yesterday that I was already excited about this mornings  breakfast and it ends up that I was so excited that I woke up at 5:30am despite being able to sleep in.

So what may you ask, has me all worked up?

Sun Warrior Raw Vegan Protein Powder

The ultimate anti-aging protein designed for athletes, body builders, and health enthusiasts. Ideal for those who want to lose fat, build muscle mass and be extremely healthy and fit.

I have been wanting to try this protein powder for quite some time and picked up a bag yesterday along with SoL Sunflower Beverage!

+

SōL is a refreshing sunflower beverage made from wholesome sunflower kernels, one of nature’s most potent superfoods. SōL is a delicious, creamy, nutritious beverage that can be enjoyed any time of day. One serving of SōL provides 50% RDA of Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that destroys free radicals, protects the heart and brain, and promotes healthy, glowing skin. Dairy free, gluten free SOL is available in three flavors: Original, Vanilla, and Unsweetened.

Key Nutritional Benefits: SOL Sunflower Beverage is made from sunflower seeds, one of nature’s most potent superfoods. Sunflower seeds are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals that help neutralize cancer-causing free radicals and slow down signs of aging. Sunflower seeds are also packed with essential minerals such as phosphorus, selenium, zinc, magnesium, and manganese. SOL’s vitamins, minerals, and Omega-3 fats boost immunity, promote brain and heart health, strengthen bones and teeth, and promote beautiful, younger-looking skin from within.

As you know, I get very excited about trying new things and it took all my might not to whip up a smoothie then and there but I am practicing my Mindful Diet program right now and can honestly say that I was not hungry and that I could wait until the morning to give this a try.  That is some willpower.

So after reading all the benefits of both the Sunwarrior Protein Powder coupled with the SOL Sunflower Beverage I feel like I should be glowing right about now. I may just be!

Sunflower Power Smoothie

1 cup SoL Vanilla Sunflower Beverage
1 scoop Sunwarrior Vanilla Protein Powder
1/2 frozen banana 3/4 cup frozen dark cherries
1 cup fresh spinach
Sprinkling of Sunflower Seeds

Combine the above ingredients in Vitamix 5200 or blender of choice.  Blend until smooth and creamy.  Top with sunflower seeds and enjoy!

The color is not as appetizing as it tasted.  Yum!

This smoothie was absolutely delicious and made me full of energy. I really like the Sunwarrior Protein Powder.  It is definitely a little different than Whey powder but in a good way.  The SoL milk was creamy and delicious but I am going to have to try it on its own to really give you a good description of how it tastes.  I am tempted to make this a two shake kind of day and will report back with my next concoction.

After dropping the kids off at school I went for a fabulous run in Laurelhurst Park.  I am afraid I am going to jinx myself by talking about the good weather because this is Portland and all, but we have  had a very sunny week and I really enjoyed the brisk run in the beautiful sunshine this morning.  I believe I did 7 miles and plan in trying out a new circuit workout later today.

In keeping with the Sunflower Power theme, lunch was my all-time favorite

SunButter and Banana on Ezekiel English Muffin

1 Ezekiel English Muffin, toasted 1 tbsp SunButter
1 banana, sliced Sunflower Seeds

Delish!

I am learning so many great thing through my studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and am also discovering what works for me and my body.  So far, I realize that I am not an extremist and do not do will with eliminating food groups-- such as meat and dairy.  The minute I think I may want to give up meat and dairy I have a undeniable craving for such things.  The same holds true for cutting back on grains and carbs, i.e. a more Paleo-ish diet.  I am a true Flexitarian and although I try to eat a more plant-based diet I am going to focus on being more mindful and eating when I am hungry and stopping when I am full.  I am going to try to include a rainbow of color in my diet and really work on having a healthy relationship with food.  I love food so much and think that each meal should be celebrated and make you feel good.  So far both my meals have made me feel good today and it is only 12:00pm!

That is my two cents for the day.  I am off to do a Health History and then plan on getting outside again to soak up the rays.
Have a Happy and Healthy Day!
