Sugar-free is not as trendy as it used to be. After the Atkins guy died, people started rethinking the low-carb lifestyle, wondering whether or not it was safe. Look, shoving bacon and cheese into your mouth and calling it a diet probably isn't safe, but there's certainly nothing bad about low-card. Especially if you are eliminating processed sugar from your diet. But you love sugar?
No worries! If you have a sweet tooth that won't quit, there is a fantastic place in LA for sugar-free fare - Mani's Bakery on Fairfax. Mani's is lovely. It's cute little caf' with outdoor seating and a healthy attitude. The bakery case at Mani's takes up a lot of the indoor area and is filled with scrumptious delights that are made from organically grown whole wheat and fruit juice reduction, agave syrup, evaporated cane juice and granulated maple syrup. And the selection of 'clairs, pies and cookies just doesn't quit.
I'll tell you what - the Tiramiwho Torte makes me want to cry and although it has some calories, it's a heck of a lot better than grabbing for that bag of Oreo's or that pint of Ben and Jerry's. And the desserts at Mani's aren't that expensive. They range from a couple bucks for a cookie and $6.75 for a slice of chocolate cake.
The fun thing about the desserts there are, they taste great. In my opinion, you could probably take a box of Mani's cookies to a party and only have one person ask if they are 'healthy'. My boyfriend, however, would fight me on this. He says (as a non-health nut) that although good, the cookies are thicker in his mouth than a regular cookie and are missing something. (Um, probably that raging sugar rush that puts hi on the ceiling then knocks him out an hour later.) Personally, I think they're better than anything with processed sugar. Especially the 'clairs - a rich Bavarian style center, chocolate on top' I'm going to Mani's.
