sugar addiction

Posted by Leticia B.

What's the best way to beat addiction to sugar? Try some sort of replacement or gradual decrease in the intake? Or a radical detox program? I reckon the last option might require a spectacular will power, but if there is some indication that it is the best way to go, I would be willing to give it a shot. I'm concerned I might develop some sort of insulin resistance if I keep eating as much sugar as I do. BTW, this article, published recently in a top notch biology journal, is very interesting: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%253Adoi%252F10.1371%252Fjournal.pone.0000698 Cheers, L.

Go cold turkey. The best way for me is to go cold turkey on processed sugar. That doesn't mean that you don't have any sugar at all. Try fresh pineapple slices, grapes and frozen dark cherries and eat them at times yuo normally eat sweets. And drink lots of water. It may seem radical but after just a couple of days you'll see a huge difference.
Cold urkey, yes!. First of all, when you go cold turkey, you will see immediate results in how you look within a couple of days. If you get a headache, flush it out with lots of water. Also, enjoy your favorite savory foods. Your taste buds will adjust. I would then introduce sugar-free foods slowly. But first, give yourself a clean slate!
Know Thy Addiction. I think the best way to beat an addiction, sugar included, is to understand it. Start paying attention to patterns of cravings: what sparks them, what time of day do they happen, what are you feeling (hungry, tired, bored, sad, mad, social) when they strike, etc. Once you better understand your addiction, you can know where to start tackling it. Sometimes attacking that which drives you there is easier (and more long-lasting) than tackling the behavior itself.
Consider Hypnosis either way. Cold Turkey works after about three days of suffering. As sugar is highly addictive, when it's in you system you have cravings. When it's out, the physical cravings disappear. But what about the emotional cravings, or the reason you developed this habit in the first place? If the cause is not addressed, then the habit, or addiction will come back in one way or another. Hypnosis and Nuero Lingustic Programming (NLP)can be very helpful in addressing the causal issues. Once they are addressed, the behavior change becomes easy.
Slow and Steady worked for me. I enjoy my cup of tea, especially with sugar. But it piled on completely useless calories. So I gradually started decreasing the amount of sugar, to the point where I have reduced the quantity by three-fourths. I do not know when I would be able to relish a sugar-free cup of tea, but I look forward to it.

Regular exercise, avoiding junk food and controlled diet is the solution to high level blood sugar.
