Spices boost foods for flavor but contain healing properties to battle disease

Spices that zero calorie burst of zest to flavor those not so flavorful recipes. Researchers are now locating the science on how these spices battle disease.

Turmeric shows promise when it comes to battling Alzheimer’s disease, Cystic Fibrosis and even some cancers. This spice contains both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. |Researchers have discovered that turmeric especially its component of curcurmin is rich in antioxidants.

A study in the journal Gastroenterology had found this spice prevents tumor growth associated to colon cancer thanks to its wonderful component of curcurmin. Researchers discovered curcurmin can set off the bodies own tumor suppression activity to prevent cancerous tumors from growing and spreading. Even though the study had looked at colon cancer researchers believe it may provide the same action in other types of cancer.

In 1980 a study published in India had shown that patients with rheumatoid arthritis who had taken 1,200 milligrams each day had the same amount of stiffness and swelling reduction as compared to those who had taken the anti-inflammatory drug Phenylbotazone.

In laboratory studies turmeric has also been shown to block the growth of errant cells linked with breast, skin, colon and lymphoma cancer.

Cinnamon has been found to help those with diabetes by reducing triglycerides, bad cholesterol and sugar in the blood. According to US research just a half teaspoon of cinnamon daily could help type 2 diabetes.

Webster University conducted tests with Cinnamon oil and demonstrated it was more effective than Ampicillian in preventing the growth of Staphylococcal infections while leaving beneficial bacteria in tact while eliminating disease.

Cumin seeds could have anti-carcinogenic properties. In a study cumin was demonstrated to protect laboratory animals from the development of stomach or liver tumors.

Saffron could have a chemo-preventive effect against liver cancer. This new study is published in next months issue of Hepatology which was conducted on rats has researchers believing that the spices power may aide in battling cancer by decreasing inflammation in the liver and inhibiting growth of cancer cells.

Ginger brings relief to upset stomach, motion and morning sickness. The main compound gingerol decreases substances in the GI tract which can ease nausea.  Ginger also eases migraine and arthritis pain by blocking the action of prostaglandins, substances which cause inflammation of the blood vessels in the brain and joints. It may also have the ability to help eliminate ovarian cancer cells by causing them to digest themselves.

Sage just may be beneficial to fight rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, bronchial asthma and atherosclerosis.

In June 2003, a study appeared in Pharmacological Biochemical Behavior which had demonstrated that people given sage essential oil extracts had remarkably improved recall abilities in comparison to those given a placebo.

Parsley’s main benefit is its ability to fight cancer.  Animal studies have demonstrated it can halt tumor formation especially in the lungs. It is known to neutralize carcinogens including those which are found in cigarette smoke and smoke from the charcoal grill.

Let us not forget those red chili peppers and cayenne peppers. They contain capsaicin an anti-inflammatory compound which aides in providing pain relief. These peppers have been found to clear congestion by clearing mucus from the lungs and nose. Boost your immunity. Killing bacteria to prevent stomach ulcers. They decrease blood cholesterol, triglyceride levels and platelet aggression. Prevent cancers such as stomach cancer.
