First of all..can you believe it’s September already? Where has this year gone? I’ve been so busy that it’s just flashed before my eyes. Luckily I’ve still managed to drink my fair share of wine and try new ones every day. Which brings me to my September Wine of the Month. This month I chose a Riesling from Washington State. Now before you get all “I don’t like sweet wine” on me, just hear me out.
I’m not normally a sweet wine fan myself and Riesling is not a wine I drink often. I enjoy a really delicious, well-made Riesling, but I don’t drink them on a day to day basis. But when I tried the Efeste Riesling from Columbia Valley it was love at first sip.
Efeste Riesling Evergreen Vineyard 2010
This Riesling is from the Evergreen Valley which is Washington State’s and quite possibly the countries best site for dry Riesling. The wine opens up with a bright pop of acidity, and then you get flavors of white peach, apricot, and even a bit of sour cherry. There is a lot of fruit in this wine, but the high acidity balances everything out and ends up giving the wine a nice long finish.
It is absolutely delicious and perfect to sit and sip on a warm September afternoon day. This wine would be great with slightly spicy dishes, but would also be perfect with a cheese plate. Blue cheeses, stronger cheeses, and even mild soft cheeses. The perfect combination.
