Reduce Your Blood Pressure Risk With Berries

Posted May 04 2011 10:07pm

Sure, after reading the title you thought it was silly, but it's true. You can reduce your risk of high blood pressure with a serving of berries a day.

What does high blood pressure mean?

Simply put, the blood flow that goes through your arteries is increased and can lead to serious complications. Some of the complications include arteriosclerosis, heart failure, kidney damage or failure and stroke. Sounds scary? Well, it is and it's not something you want to ignore or hope it will go away.

According to a recent study that tracked individuals with blood pressure issues for over 14 years, consuming one serving of berries a day reduced the risk of high blood pressure by 10% compared to those who did not eat any berries. Researchers believe that the component found in the berries such as strawberries and blueberries, called anthocyanin contributed to the reduction in risk. Anthocyanin is a a dietary flavonoid which is present in blueberries and strawberries and in other berries but in much less quantities.

Although the risk factors of familial, body mass and index, physical activity and dietary factors are still present. It is interesting to note that by adding berries to your diet will not only help you feel better it will also help in reducing the risk of high blood pressure. Instead of reaching for a magic pill, if given the choice consider monitoring your diet, include physical activity and enjoy your berries. Your heart, mind and body will thank you for the decision.
