raw food diet - questions

Posted by Jane

My husband prescribes to a total 'raw food diet'. Before meeting him I'd never heard of this and have struggled to accept that it's the ideal way to live as it can be quite restricting. My own diet is relatively normal. I appreciate that he has spent years trying to discover what he thinks is the healthiest way to eat (though I believe this is elusive) but I feel that this passion has really taken over his life. My concern is that he is not getting the right nutrients in his diet. I've given up trying to convince him otherwise but the diet is so extreme and so unappealing. Is there anyone else out there who is in a similar situation?

Most raw food diets that are out there are high fat.  A lot of raw foodists eat up to 70% of their calories from fat and this is very damaging health wise, when we should be consuming around 10% fat (total calories) whether raw or not.

A raw food diet can be very healthy as long as it is low fat.  If your husband is consuming a high quantity of fruits and greens (which contain all the nutrients your body needs) then his healthy should be amazing.  If he is eating lots of nuts, avocadoes, and adding oil to everything as well as using salt and vinegar then he is being misled.

I would therefore suggest if he is the latter to read the 80/10/10 diet by Dr Doug Graham ( http://www.foodnsport.com ).

It isn't really restricting.  There are hundreds of different types of fruits available.

If you are concerned about his diet read some books to ease you mind, like the one mentioned above, and also The China Study by Colin T Campbell.  These are very good starting points.
