The Oregon Battle of the Books, OBOB, is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students in 3rd-12th grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. The mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.
So besides gearing up for BOB, I am on day 6 of NO GUM chewing. I have not wanted to admit this but I have/had a terrible addiction to gum. I know.... it is a nasty habit but I sort of used it as a way to curb my appetite when I was first losing weight 8 years ago and then the habit sort of grew out of control. Dare, I tell you that I have literally chewed a whole pack of gum in one day. Eew. By the way, my gum of choice was Orbit Sweet Mint and I literally have 3 packs of gum in the house as we speak. I knew that this was a terrible habit and wanted to get rid of it but it came across reading an article about the ingredients in gum that helped me make the mental shift to dump my gum addiction. (I have been seaching my inbox to find this article because it was so good!) I will post a link once I find it.
Bye Bye Gum Habit!
The long and the short of it is that I have given up the ghost and have not chewed any gum for 6 days. The first two were tough because I generally popped a few pieces of gum in my mouth around 3:00pm and then after dinner when I wanted something sweet. But this article (which I have to find!!!) really made me wonder why I was ingesting a bunch of chemicals each day by chewing gum. So I am feeling pretty good about laying this habit to bed. To compensate for the lack of gum, I have been drinking more water and tea which always makes me feel better too.
Okay, enough about gum and my addictions. Let's move on to two fabulous breakfast meals that I have made. The first is a fabulous Berry Blast Smoothie and second is a classic bowl of oats that made me "oh so happy."
Raspberry Cherry Flax Smoothie
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk1/2 cup frozen raspberries1/4 cup frozen cherries1 oz. aloe vera juice1/2 cup 2% greek yogurt1 tbsp ground flaxseeds 1 inch nub of fresh ginger1 cup baby spinach1 tsp fresh lemon juice
Combine all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
Oh my goodness, this smoothie ROCKED. Absolutely De- Licious. The berries are loaded with anti-oxidants and the ginger helps stimulate the digestive system. I also added aloe vera juice which nourishes the body with minerals, vitamins, and enzymes.
It has been a while since I have posted a picture of my bowls of oatmeal. I figured I better give you a break. But I made a fantastic classic bowl of oats this weekend that I topped with fresh berries and walnuts and dusted with flax. It was so darn good that I feel the need to share:
Whipped Banana Oats topped with Fresh Berries and Walnuts
That is it for today but I hope you ALL have a great rest of your Monday!
