On Friday morning I woke up bright and early to do my UBWO. It felt good to start the day off with some exercise- I knew that Friday night + Saturday morning I was having my ‘free day’ so I felt as if I was balancing my indulgences somewhat!
After my workout, I headed over to school and dug into my breakfast while doing some studying in the library. I had my usual boring Kashi Go Lean Crunch + Chobani, while doing some serious stuyding for my exam next week!
A couple hours later I had my turkey wrap for meal #2, and soon enough it was time for class.
Class was interesting- all about Feminism in the 1920’s. But I was very antsy- I wanted to get on the road! As soon as 11:50 hit I was out the door and headed to Emporium Nutrition for an on the go lunch.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie! Perfect!
I sipped this baby while I got my music set up (I know it’s a bit old-school, but I LOVE my 6-cd changer in my car. I made a whole bunch of road tunes cds on Itunes last night!) and hit the road for the 2.5 hr drive to Connecticut to see Nick.
He was sailing a regatta in Darien, and I ended up getting there in 2 hours flat! The traffic was light and I was happy I didn’t take any wrong turns. I have a secret I must admit to you all… This was the longest I have EVER driven by myself. I know, crazy! I’m 20 and I haven’t driven more than 40 minutes without anyone else in the car! I have no problem driving- I drove 6+ hours straight on the way to Canada with my dad, but I’m not too keen on having no navigation source! So I was proud of making it without a navigator, that’s for sure!
The boats were still a ways out when I arrived, so I spent a good amount of time (as in, 2 hours… grumble…) in my car, reading and chatting with my mom. I had this bar while I was waiting-
It was good, but I realized it didn’t have the right amount of protein/cho/fat for BFL.
Which got me thinking.

All week long, I have had this sinking feeling of restriction with Body For Life. I love the program, don’t get me wrong- but the exact eating patterns have been bothering me a bit.
As a nutrition major, I know healthy eating. I know the importance of balance, especially with carbohydrates and protein, and I understand that an increased amount of protein is required to gain muscle. But I also know that it is all relative. Every single meal does NOT need to be balanced 100% in order to obtain an overall balance of protein and carbohydrates. There just needs to be enough of a balance to prevent spikes in blood sugar, causing increased hunger. Balancing carbohydrates and protein does not equal weight loss. In fact, I have not lost any steady weight in the 5 weeks I have been on the challenge. Eating 5-6 small meals a day is something I am used to, I enjoy eating frequently so I am not hungry- and I have felt a large increase in my energy on this plan. But I still feel I am eating too much. The key to weight loss is calories in, calories out. And by feeling as though I am required to get in all 6 meals, or have 20 g CHO/20 g protein at each meal, I am eating too much to lose any weight. Sometimes, I eat when I’m not the least bit hungry! This is something I do not believe in, so why am I doing it?
Furthermore, I have some basic nutrient concerns with the plan. I have found that I am consuming f arless fruits and vegetables than I usually do. I feel restricted in my fruit intake- something that I love, something that is healthy- in moderation, as everything, but in NO way bad for me. I feel like I shouldn’t put hummus on my wrap, because it adds extra carbs, and this kind of thought process is not good for me to be having- as someone who has experienced disordered eating in the past, any sort of restriction is a slippery slope. A lot of the supplemental nutrition he advocates- smoothies all the time (which I do love, don’t get me wrong), and the bars- as much as I love the Advantedge and Myoplex Lite bars, they are NOT the kind of thing I would normally put in my body. I’m eating way more processed foods than I would ever choose for my own diet. Which makes me wonder: Why am I changing my own personal nutrition beliefs for a diet plan? I believe in fresh, organic, all natural foods. I believe in pure ingredients, less chemicals, less preservatives, eating locally and an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, balanced with lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats. What is wrong about having a piece of toast with peanut butter and a banana? Or some grapes along with my wrap? NOTHING.
As long as I am keeping my calories within a weight-loss range, which, most days it will be, but some days I’m sure it will not be- that’s totally normal- I will lose weight. And with an increased amount of protein, I will build lean body mass. It’s that simple.
I am in no way quitting the challenge. I love Bill Phillips’ philosophies,and the exercise and overall concept is great. I am going to continue with the workouts 100%, but I will be modifying the eating more to my own personal style. I will still be eating frequent, small meals that contain a balance of carbs, proteins and healthy fats. But I will be looking for an overall balance more than the strict 40/40/20 method. I will be eating more fruits and vegetables, and only eating when I am hungry. Why should I have a sixth meal if I am not hungry? I will be eating no more than 3 hours apart, so there will be the rare case where my appetite may not be strong, but I won’t eat “just to eat”.
The funny part to all of the thoughts I have been having? Danica has been having some similar ones as well- she expressed them in this post.
Whew, glad to get that off of my chest.
Anyway, 2.5 hours later and I got to see Nick! They did much better yesterday than the day before, so he was in a good mood =)
We got checked into the hotel, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they give out free cookies at check-in at Doubletrees!
I enjoyed my cookie while Nick showered, and we hung around for a bit while his sailing buddies got ready for dinner. We went to this little Peruvian place and I was pleasantly surprised! I was out with a bunch of guys I don’t know, so I left the camera at home. I had a dish called Arroz con Mariscos, which is basically the Peruvian equivalent of Paella. I was served a HUGE steaming hot dish of rice with vegetables, and TONS of seafood- shrimp, calamari, crab and mussles. I ate about 1/3 of the dish and it didn’t even look as though I had touched it! It was very good though. I also enjoyed a big glass of mango juice and one piece of bread.
After dinner we bid adieu to the guys and went off to find ourselves some dessert!
YUM… especially when eaten in a hotel room bed while watching a movie with a hottie =)
It’s funny, Nick and I were sharing the ice cream, straight out of the carton (with ’stolen’ plastic spoons from the deli at the store, lol) and he goes, “this is a LOT of ice cream,” and I laughed and told him I didn’t expect us to finish it! He seemed VERY relieved, and we did not come even close to finishing it! We ate about 1/2 between the two of us which is about a serving each. It was very rich!
Saturday morning came WAY too fast. I hated having to say goodbye to Nick again, but at least this time it isn’t for too long- he’s coming to visit me next weekend, so I’ll be able to see him then. He still has another day of racing after today, so wish him luck!
On our drive to drop Nick off at the yacht club, we stopped at Dunkin Donuts for breakfast. Can you guess what I got? A bagel. Of course. Guys, I am addicted obsessed. I LOVE bagels! I can’t get enough! They’re my favorite free day breakfast, hands down. I had a toasted multigrain bagel with light cream cheese and a medium pumpkin latte made with skim milk. No picture because I ate it on the go!
About 20 minutes into the 2+ hour drive home it started DOWNPOURING, and lasted the entire way home! I’m glad I made it back alright- it was a bit scary at times! When I arrived home I was super thirsty, so I chugged a Watermelon Strawberry Nantucket Nectars juice and read some blogs while I waited for my dad to finish some cleaning he was doing… I had planned on going to my High School’s homecoming football game, but it was way too rainy for me! So we made the trip to Warwick and went to Dick’s sporting goods to get me some new sneakers!
Before we left we stopped at Pick Pockets for lunch. I had the Pick Pocket Wrap which is eggplant,roasted red pepper, lettuce, fresh mozarella and balsamic viniagrette. With a side of falafel + hummus- I ate only two pieces!
At Dick’s, I ended up with the Gel-Kayano 15’s, the same style, new version of the shoe I have been wearing for going on five years. It has the perfect amount of stability for my overpronating feet. That is of course until I wear then 14 months without replacement and end up with ankle injuries! Hopefully the new pair means no injuries!
After Dick’s we got to go to Trader Joe’s!!! We stocked up on a LOT because I never get to go!! I was so excited running through the store- I’m like a kid in a candy shop! But I did get a fun bunch of surprises for my giveaway…

Amongst the fun goods I picked up I found this, which I have been dying to try!
I have heard very mixed reviews… either YUM or YUCK!! Pretty much! lol So of course I had to dig my spoon in right away.
The Verdict? I liked it! It definitely tastes like peanut butter, a little ‘off’ but not in a bad way. I can’t wait to find fun ways to use this!!

The dark chocolate caramel cupcakes I made Nick! And that was enough treats for Saturday.
I was lazy allll afternoon. I seriously got NOTHING done! Luckily I have all of tomorrow to do school work, so today was an alright lazy day =)
Dinner was thrown together, but it turned out quite tasty! I sauteed some broccoli + cauliflower + mushrooms + red pepper+ chopped chicken in EVOO, and added a tablespoon of this:
and a laughing cow light cheese wedge, to make a sort of creamy, savory sauce. I tossed it all atop one cup cooked whole wheat pasta and dinner was served!
Delicious! For something completely random, this really hit the spot!
I think meal #6 will be some sort of fruit + yogurt. We shall see!
