Pumpkin Spice Shake: The Pump Gives This Popular Fall Drink a Nutritional Upgrade.

The city is going bonkers for pumpkin-anything drinks.  Starbucks, despite announcing price hikes companywide , has lines out the door of people requesting its Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Curiosity led me to check its  nutrition facts out online.  I was disappointed (although not entirely surprised) to learn that the 16oz (or, “Grande,” in Starbucks lingo) weighed in at 380 calories with 13 grams of fat.  Yikes!

I thought… The Pump could do a pumpkin energy shake that offers a bigger nutritional bang.  I brought the idea to Danny Lachs, our executive chef, and he had the same thought.  Then, he told me about Jamba Juice’s new Pumpkin Smash .  I had never heard of it, so naturally, I looked that up too.  I found out that their 16oz size has 390 calories and a whopping 75 grams of sugar.  Holy Smokes!

Danny got to work immediately.  His mission:  create a pumpkin drink that has all the seasonal comforts without all the fat, calories and sugar.  10 minutes later…he had a solution and poured me a cup of our new Pumpkin Spice Energy Shake made from coconut water, pumpkin puree, Medjool dates, ice, whey protein and cinnamon.

It was smooth, creamy, and decadently rich without being too sweet.  For only  260 calories, 2 grams of fat and 29 grams of sugar, I’d say we got something good.   Drink up with no worries.
