My kids both play ice hockey and we are on the road a lot for tournaments. The team usually picks a place to eat together for most meals. I usually access the restaurant's website from my hotel room before we go so I know what I will order in advance. I can check out the nutritional info and answer all of my own questions before we ever get there. This has become so second nature that my kids often do this when they travel with the team alone.
Another idea for managing to eat well when dining out is to start with a salad or even a piece of fruit. It's easier to place a healthier order if you're not starving, and you'll eat less if you choose to indulge in something fattening.
