The wonders of the pomegranate just keep getting better. An extract from the leaves of this powerful super fruit can suppress the appetite and inhibit fat absorption in the intestines, according to a recent animal study published in the International Journal of Obesity.
While Chinese researchers found that the leaf extract helped obese mice fed a high-fat diet, it does not affect mice eating a normal diet. Translation: If you eat an over abundance of fat, you're in luck. If not, don't bother.
The study also found that cholesterol levels improved when the mice were supplemented with pomegranate leaf extract.
The hopeful conclusion for the millions of Americans battling the bulge is that pomegranate leaf extract can inhibit obesity, say researchers.
But don't run out the door to your nearest health food store to buy it just yet. It seems the nutritional supplement companies are a little behind the curve on this one. However, it's a good bet that it's only a matter of time when pomegranate leaf extract will be touted as the biggest thing in weight loss.
