Orlando Boot Camp - Are Your Salads Sabotaing Your Diet?

Posted Apr 28 2009 7:33am
Even though we are fully aware that health and obesity issues are rising at staggering rates, Americans still seem to be getting fatter. According to Leanne Ellington, people are often deceived into thinking that they are consuming a healthy meal and contributing to their potential weight loss when they eat a hearty salad, but in actuality, many salads are loaded with tons of fat and extra calories. Here are three ways to let your salads help you reach your weight loss goals instead of sabotaging them.

1. Ask for the dressing on the side. It is so easy to make your salad an excess calorie pit if you make those nutrient-dense veggies swim in high-fat dressings. Try dipping your fork into the dressing and then picking up the bite of salad. It's just enough dressing to give added flavor and taste, but not enough to kill your diet. You will be shocked at how much dressing you would have consumed had you not kept it in check.

2. Make sure your salads are filled with protein-rich foods. Add a serving grilled chicken, lean beef, fish, tofu, soybeans, or any other lean source of protein to make your meal a little more well-rounded and healthy. I love spicing up my salads by seasoning the meats to give it that extra added flavor. There are so many calorie-free herbs and seasonings out there that you can never get sick of just one .

3. Cut out big servings of cheese, bacon bits , croutons, and other calorie-dense fixings. This one is a no-brainer. The easiest way to turn a healthy salad into junk food is by filling it with copious amounts of one of the above items. You don't have to completely cut it out of your salads altogether. Just remember that a little bit goes a long way. Everything can be eaten in moderation.
