Organic Coffee vs. Regular?

Posted by C.L. R.

I am curious if anyone has any more information on this. I have a friend that has said that drinking non-organic coffee is unsafe and unhealthy. She claims that one cup of regular coffee (or non-organic) contains pesticides and chemicals that are equivilant to a year's worth of organic coffee. I looked up information on this online and learned that many of these types of chemicals and pesticides that create residue on "non-organic" coffee are banned in North America. However, many types of coffee are imported into the US, creating the problem. One of many benefits of organic coffee, according to my reading, is that (obviously) it does not come with chemicals. Studies suggest that many of the problems associated with coffee treatment should not be blamed on the coffee, but the pesticides and chemicals involved. Plus, with organic, the taste of the coffee is improved and the caffeine content a bit less harsh as the beans are (typically) higher quality. I'm wondering if anyone has actually noticed a difference? Sometimes I wonder if I've convinced myself that organic coffee tastes better because I know it's organic. Although, I will say this - I did once have a situation where I bought a package of coffee at a cheapity cheap place and after drinking it, I felt sick and threw out the batch. Was it due to chemicals? Pesticides? Could be. Better safe than sorry. Organic all the way.

It is true that some coffee imports can be dangerous and that organic generally is safer. However, the truly best coffee to seek is Fair Trade, because it helps promote reasonable wages and business practices for coffee growers in emerging nations - which often includes sound environmental practices. A leader in the United States in advocating for Fair Trade coffee is Co-Op America.
