Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Prevent Type I Diabetes

Posted by Nirmala N.

According to researchers at the University of Colorado, a diet that's rich in omega-3 fats could prevent the onset of type 1 diabetes among children at risk. Omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to a lower incidence of autoantibodies in the blood, which are responsible for signaling the immune systm to to attack pancreatic insulin-producing cells. The acids also have anti-inflammatory properties, which is important, as inflammations is thought to produce type 1 diabetes, through the destruction of insulin-producing cells. While this may be a breakthrough in preventive medicine, further research needs to be conducted before a definite dietary recommendation is made.
