Nutrition Tip Of The Week

Tip #7

Eat Fat, Lose Fat

by Dr. John Berardi

As you may recall from my carbohydrate rant back on July 14, I find it mind-boggling when people decide to remove an entire macronutrient from their diet. Fat is no exception.

Take a look at Dr. Berardi's Nutrition Tip below, which is followed by some recommendations I have on this topic:

To lose fat, sometimes you have to eat fat. Monosaturated fats and certain polyunsaturates actually speed up the metabolic rate. Lipid researchers believe that the best of the fat burning bunch are the unsaturated omega 3s called EPA and DHA . A diet supplemented with omega 3-rich fish oil promotes losses of body fat with simultaneous gains in lean mass.

Thanks as always to Dr. Berardi , and now a few of my thoughts ...

Aside from protein, fat is the only other essential macronutrient . By essential we mean that fat cannot be produced by the body so it must be consumed via your diet.

The primary dietary sources for healthy essential fats are cold water seafood, flax oil and seeds, and mixed nuts. These foods contain high levels of omega 3 fats which are believe to have heart health benefits.

Good choices for omega 3 fats include:

  • Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Sardines
  • Scallops
  • Cod
  • Lake Trout
  • Tuna
  • Flax Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Olives
  • Nuts and Seeds (particularly flax seeds and walnuts)
  • Avocado

Keep in mind that while omega 3 fats are a healthier fat alternative, over-eating any macronutrient will lead to weight gain so be certain to monitor your daily intake.

Train hard; stay strong.

Peace.

Susan
