I’ve just read a pamphlet where the USDA now recommends that we get NINE servings of fruits and veggies a day! Were you even getting the old five a day recommendation? This is what they consider to be a serving: ½ cup of juice; 1 cup raw, leafy salad greens; ½ cup chopped raw, canned or cooked fruit or other vegetables.
So, it would seem that we have to have at least 3 servings of fruits and vegetables at each meal! Salads, cooked veggies, a glass of juice or fruit desserts, each time we eat, each day. I think that most people maybe get a glass of juice in the morning and some veggies at night. Now, we will have to make a constant and concerted effort for health.
Strictly, especially? I try to get as many fruits and vegetables into my meals as possible each day, but from the days in elementary school when they started teaching us the food pyramid, I would think to myself "yea, right." I'm sure some people can, but the majority, I think, do their best to get some of those servings in. But 9? That sounds like a little much, requiring a lot of creativity, time and energy on a busy weekday.
