New Discoveries- Newton Fruit Thins + CB Nuts

Posted Jun 07 2011 12:00am

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday!
As part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker's Program I was sent a bag of  Nabisco's new product-Newtons Fruit Thins.  I have a sweet spot in my heart for Fig Newtons which were my favorite cookie as a kid and was looking forward to trying out these Newton Fruit Thins.  These are thin, crispy cookies baked with real fruit and have 8 grams of whole grains per serving.  The Cranberry Citrus Oat Fruit thins combine real cranberries and oats for a crispy treat like no other.  The Newtons Fruit Thins come in three other flavors:
Blueberry Brown SugarChocolate Raspberryand Fig and Honey

These Cranberry Citrus Oat Fruit Thins are truly tasty.  These  remind me of  tea biscuits that are not overly sweet and the touch of citrus flavor makes these surprisingly refreshing.  Although I love to bake and rarely buy store-bought cookies I was happy that these were:
  • Made with Real Fruit
  • Good Source of Whole Grain* (8 g per serving)
  • No High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • 3 cookies for 140

My kids loved these and want to try the Blueberry Brown Sugar next.
I think these cookies would be a great accompaniment to a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  Yum!

I could hardly wait for breakfast this morning because I was dying to try CB's Nuts Creamunchy Peanut Butter.
CB's PB is fresh roasted Valencia Peanuts ground to a "creamunchy" texture - nice and thick yet easy to spread with little ground bits.

Our peanut butter is the freshest you can get. We roast the peanuts to order and grind the peanut butter while the nuts are still warm. The oils of our peanut butter are so freshly activated by the roasting process that you won't see the same type of separation seen in many "nothing-added" peanut butters. We recommend you refrigerate it if you aren't going to consume it all within two weeks. Even after refrigeration our peanut butter is easy to spread.

I found this fabulous peanut butter at Whole Foods.  The texture is amazing and it tastes super FRESH.  If you do not live in the Pacific NW, might I suggest you order the following from the CBNuts website

Super Duper PB&J

Sending your kid off to college for the first time? Want a unique thank you gift? What could be better than a peanut butter and jelly pack? This combo of CB's PB, Dave's Killer Bread and Graysmarsh Farm Preserves makes the best PB&J we've ever had - packaged together you have lunch for a week.

CB's PB is fresh roasted Valencia Peanuts ground to a "creamunchy" texture - nice and thick yet easy to spread with little ground bits. Dave's Killer Bread is the best there is, and we're particularly fond of the Good Seed variety. Graysmarsh Farm brings us preserves (with chunks of fruit!) in Blackberry, Raspberry, Marionberry or Strawberry. All are products of the Northwest.

So I have been learning all sorts of new things at my job and find the knowledge of my fellow trainers amazing.  We have a great group of trainers and it ranges from the Vegan Body Builder to Bikini Body Builders to little ol' me!  I have not talked about my weight for some time because I am still struggling with my 4lb weight gain. I  had sort of come to terms that I am 42 years old, about to be 43 in a month from today--that's weird- and that I was too old to let the # on the scale rule my life.   I will admit that I have been a bit self-concious about my body and figure since starting work but am using this as an opportunity to get back on my game.  I am ready to get ripped!  Just kidding.  But I think with a few tweaks here and there I can make my work outs more efficient and lean out a little.  I will let you know what I come up with!

One of the discussion we were having yesterday was about food and diets.... no surprise there... and a fellow trainer said he followed a SLOW CARB Diet and lost 10 lbs in two weeks.  Wow!

The following is the basic premise of the diet
Health experts have discovered that many people are having success on a so-called "slow-carb diet," which is based on eating foods with a low-glycemic index. Foods with a low GI break down glucose in your body slowly, keeping your blood sugar levels constant throughout the day. No more counting calories or carbs on this diet - just follow the rules and try to keep your meals simple.

Difficulty:Moderately Challenging

Instructions

1 Black beans
Eat as much as you want of the following foods: proteins (lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, and cottage cheese); vegetables (except white potatoes); legumes (peas, lentils, beans, and nuts); and healthy fats (fish oil, saturated fat, olive oil and flax seed). Try spreading out your meals, and eating 4-5 smaller meals a day.

2 Avoid eating any white carbohydrates: white bread, white rice, white cereals. Even many whole grain breads and cereals contain high fructose corn syrup, so limit your consumption of those.

3 Avoid eating fruit, unless you're doing so within two hours after a workout. Your body converts fruit to fat if you eat too much of it. Avoid drinking milk, which easily makes your body gain fat, and avoid eating any kind of junk food or sodas. Stick with water, coffee or tea, if you can.

4 Sample meals on this diet might include eggs (or egg whites) with black beans for breakfast, beef with black beans and mixed veggies, tuna salad with olive oil & nuts, turkey burgers, steak with peas, or grilled chicken and white beans mixed in a green salad. Stock up on canned black beans, white beans and frozen vegetables, so you will always have them on hand.

5 Proponents of this diet advise that when you're eating out, the easiest restaurants to find meals consistent with this diet are Mexican. Simply order meals with beef or chicken, and substitute additional black/red beans or vegetables for rice. Beware of fatty or creamy sauces when eating out.

6 Eat anything you like on your cheat day
An appealing option for the slow-carb diet has been recommended by Tim Ferriss, author of "The Four-Hour Workweek," who successfully lost 20 pounds on this diet. He suggests setting aside one day a week as your cheat day. You can eat everything you're missing - junk food, white carbs, sodas, even candy bars - on your cheat day. By doing this, believe it or not, you increase your fat loss by keeping your metabolic rate high.

Hmm...... I have a few thoughts about this but would love to hear from any of you who have tried this diet?  A couple things that stick out for me is the fact that I can't eat FRUIT.  A day without my daily banana might just kill me.  Ha!  The other is thing is the "cheat day".  I am not on board with a day of junk food.  Interesting stuff.

Off to work I go and am look forward to learning more.....

Have a great day!
