My Wolf Pine Farm Winter Share

I'm really excited. I picked up our "winter share" at the designated pickup spot, O'Naturals in Falmouth, Maine. It was a good place for me to pick it up as I'm still on crutches, and Tom from Wolf Pine Farm said there would be plenty of help getting my veggies carried to my car. The shares are delivered once every three weeks from now until May.

I decided to do this after reading a Portland Press Herald article about Maine farmers growing food in the winter because of an increased demand for local produce. I chose Wolf Pine Farm because it offers organic vegetables from its Alfred (Maine) farm, not too far from Portland.

I met one of the owners, Amy, when she was doing the Portland Farmers Market a few years ago. She's very pleasant and cheerful and did a nice job of displaying her beautiful vegetables. She really seemed to love what she was doing. When I e-mailed her husband Tom to find out if they had any shares left, I was happy to find they did. Last I read on their Web site, they still have five shares left for anyone else interested in great, fresh Maine-grown organic local produce!

Today's share included: 4 pounds of carrots, 4 pounds of potatoes, 3 pounds of apples, a pound of  parsnips, 2 pounds of beets, a half-gallon of cider, a pound of shallots, a few bulbs of garlic, 1.75 pounds of broccoli, a celeriac, a bag of salad greens, a butternut squash and a half-dozen eggs.

What's the cost? Amy and Tom say: Affordable, about $20/week (and they have flexible payment plans for any budget).

I had a deliciously crisp, tart Maine apple as soon as I came into the house. Nothing like locally grown organic apples! Go Maine!
