Hi All,
What better way is there to say "I love you" to Mom on Mother's Day than to keep her healthy when eating out? You can have a great time on Mother's Day and not clog Mom's arteries in the process :)
Here are a few ways to celebrate Mother's Day and still eat healthy when eating out (especially if you are a flexitarian like me and go meatless most of the time, but these healthy eating tips are great for anyone):
1. Take The Initiative To Suggest Where To Eat--a place that works for your eating needs, yet leaves choice for others. Generally, I'll do best with Italian, Mexican or Chinese food, Seafood and Salad Buffets/restaurants with great salad bars. And of course I'll make the most healthful picks possible. I have a 24/7 place near me in Las Vegas that makes healthy Mexican!
2. Don't Be Afraid To Request Substitutions, Additions Or Special Preparations--for example, ask to have fish grilled without butter, to substitute whole wheat pasta for white pasta, to add vegetables to a pasta dish that doesn't have any.
3. Eat Breakfast, Not Just For Breakfast--for example, you can get Eggbeaters and vegetable add-ins for omelets, wheat toast (no butter), fruit, whole grain cereal and whole grain pancakes in many places--even a chain like IHOP will accommodate your healthy requests pretty easily and they are often open 24/7. You can have breakfast while another person in your party gets a lunch item.
For more about how breakfast doesn't have to be for breakfast solely see my previous post A Healthy Breakfast Is Not Just For Breakfast
4. Make a Meal Of Sides--Check out the side dishes and pick a couple to make a complete meal. For example, a salad, baked potato (no fattening sour cream or butter) and mixed vegetables with whole wheat bread/rolls.
5. Know Which Restaurants Offer The Foods That Meet Your Needs--this way you are prepared to travel nationally, or even internationally in some cases. For example, I know I can get a Boca Burger at Denny's, Johnny Rockets, Fat Burger (ironic don't you think) and Bennigan's.
Happy Mother's Day To My Mom, and All The Mom's Into Healthy Eating (or who should be :)
