Mindfully Happy

Posted Mar 18 2009 3:40pm

Today is a great day. After being MIA for awhile, I finally finished up my last final of for the quarter! On to a glorious spring break. And to top everything off, I received word in my email today that I have been invited to a special honors luncheon with none other than Mr. Brian Wansink, author of "Mindless Eating" when he comes to speak at our campus on April 2nd (thank you to my wonderful adviser for submitting my name if you are reading this)!

If you have not heard of Brian Wansink, you are missing out. His book, "Mindless Eating: Why we eat more than we think", takes a look at the amount of food we eat, and the psychology behind our actions. His lab has conducted such studies as the bottomless soup bowl study where he and his researchers actually rigged the soup bowls of unknowing customers to automatically refill as the soup was eaten. It turned out that as the soup was eaten, customers just kept going, unable to perceive themselves as "full" and instead paying more attention to the idea of cleaning their plates. His studies show just how disconnected our stomach is from our brains, many of us don't really even pay attention to when we are full, or when we are just on autopilot. Check out his website here. The book is extremely reader friendly, and you will probably find yourself thinking, "Yep, I definitely do that."

I also noticed that Tangled Noodle has been conducting an online discussion of the book on her blog, so you can check out her thoughts here.

I can't wait to fill you in on all he has to say. In the mean time, I highly recommend you check out his webpage, as well as his book for a different way of examining why we eat the way that we do.
