Men With Healthy Habits Live Longer, Even to Age 90

Posted Oct 02 2008 3:12pm

An interesting study, "Exceptional Longevity in Men," just came out in the of Archives of Internal Medicine, which found that men with healthy habits live much longer.

Go to MedPageToday.com to hear an intriguing audio clip from head researcher Laurel B. Yates, M.D., M.P.H., a a geriatrician at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

It certainly wasn't surprising that men were at increased risks for dying before age 90 if they had bad habits such as these:

  • Smoking, HR 2.10 (95% CI 1.75 to 2.51)
  • Diabetes, HR 1.86 (95% CI 1.52 to 2.26)
  • Obesity (body mass index of at least 30), HR 1.44 (95% CI 1.10 to 1.90)
  • Hypertension, HR 1.28 (95% CI 1.15 to 1.43)
  • Exercise, HR 0.72 (95% CI 0.62 to 0.83)

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like sugar or carb intake was considered, too.
