Got an oven? As an alternative to shelling out ample dollars on PowerBars and Clif Bars and the like, why not make your own? Bay Area-based Matisse & Jack's has introduced TrailBlaze bake-at-home energy bar mix. Available in Cranberry Discovery and Chocolate Amazon flavors, the mixes contain healthful ingredients such as organic oats, dried fruit, and organic flax seed, and can be prepared as a vegan, low-sugar bar, depending on whether you make them with yogurt or applesauce. The bars contain complex carbs without a lot of sugar (only 11 grams in the mix), nine grams of protein (more if you mix with yogurt), Omega-3s and eight grams of protein, but no refined flours or preservatives. Good stuff! And thankfully, for folks like me who could probably mess up Jell-O, they're easy to make. In the Bay Area, you can find TrailBlaze at Andronico's, Berkeley Bowl, Mollie Stone's, Whole Foods, and Rainbow Grocery, among other markets. Visit www.matisseandjacks.com for info.
