Lynn - Goodbye, San Diego

Posted Oct 18 2009 10:06pm

Before checking out of the hotel this morning I did an hour workout. The Doubletree in Mission Valley has a terrific gym, and I was pretty much the only one there.

The film festival was hosting an industry brunch so we stopped by that. They were serving Mexican food from Super Cocina:

I had some of everything, plus a fruit skewer -

I ate everything you see here: chicken, eggs, rice/beans and 2 corn tortillas. (Not pictured: 2 green pills, a fish oil capsule, and my multi.)

After munching and schmoozing we were ready to hit the road back to Los Angeles. I felt sad, because it was time to turn back into a pumpkin (no offense to pumpkins).

The San Diego Asian Film Festival holds a special place in my heart because it's where I first met other Asian-American filmmakers and actors when my film, " Saving Face" opened there. Now, four years later, I am so grateful to be accepted and part of a community that supports and celebrates each others talents, and it's inspiring to see how much everyone, especially the festival itself, has grown since then.

Goodbye hospitality suite...

Goodbye super staff....

Goodbye, San Diego. Hello Los Angeles!

We got back just in time as the farmer's market was closing.

I picked up a bunch of produce on the cheap. When we got home we had to make 2 trips from the car because we had so much stuff.

After unpacking I felt like I needed to eat something, but I was still pretty full from brunch. I devoured an apple I had grabbed from the hospitality suite. It was humongous - this picture doesn't do it justice. I sat outside and caught up on some reading (this is the food issue of last week's NY Times Magazine ).

I was still feeling like I needed to unwind but I didn't feel up to taking my usual afternoon walk. I think it was the combo of coming down off the high of the weekend and also being anxious about this upcoming week - I am starting a new part-time job as a personal assistant, plus I have piano lessons to teach and some babysitting too. It's all good because I need the money and I like having a full schedule, I just wish it was filled with more ACTING stuff, especially after a weekend of celebrating my creative side.

But such is the life of an actor, and it's part of why I wanted to start this blog - to show how mundane it really is, in between the glamorous stuff. It was the subject of Christy and my now defunct podcast - to dispel this myth that actors are always working. Unemployment is a huge part of the job, and it's totally normal to not be go-go-go all the time. Show business happens fast, and it's important to not freak out during the lulls of this roller coaster ride.

I listened to a relaxation recording (wound up falling asleep) and that seemed to do the trick. I felt much better after that.

For dinner I wanted to use some of this sample that Nuttzo Peanut Butter sent.

From their website:

  • Legumes + nuts and seeds = a complete protein (all your amino acids), so put NuttZo on a sliced apple or banana…or a spoon.

  • You’ll taste the earthy, elegant hazelnut pieces and nutty, flavorful, crunchy flax seeds in every bite. Whole brown flax seeds add fiber as well as nutritious Omega 3s as long as the skins have been broken through chewing. Ground flax seeds are added for easy absorption of Omega 3s. Valencia peanuts, cashews, flax seeds, Brazil nuts, and sunflower seeds are medium roasted and then ground into a delectable thin butter. The Valencia peanuts and sunflower seeds add a touch of sweetness. (There’s no added sugar in NuttZo.)

  • Provides 50% of your DV of ALA Omega 3 per serving (650 mg).

It's a bit expensive - retailing for a little over $12 - but I love that they support Project Left Behind, "a non-profit focused on providing nourishment and surrogate nurturing tools to orphans around the world."

Since there's no sugar, I thought it would be good in a savory dish.

Nuttzo Noodles (serves 3)

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add a package of soba noodles (I used these organic green tea ones)

And some cut up organic baby bok choy -

Let them cook for 5-6 minutes.

Meanwhile, make a sauce using 1 TB Nuttzo (look how seedy!)...

...plus 2 TB Tamari, and 2 TB Rice Wine Vinegar. Whisk with 1/4 cup of the noodle/bok choy cooking water until it's smooth and creamy.

Drain the noodles/bok choy, put them back in the pot, and combine with the sauce.

I added a generous squirt of Sriracha, plus a dash of salt.

Served in my new SDAFF mug -

I've made this dish many times before and it's never been quite so creamy and delicious. Thanks, Nuttzo!

I also ate some organic grapes, a calcium chew, and a Nestle Peanut Butter Nip. The Fortune Cookie was from the Festival swag bag; I didn't actually eat it (I'm not a fan of them)...

... but I do like reading my fortunes....

So true! I am actually going back NEXT weekend, because I'm in another movie there. So in a few days, I'll be saying hello again to the gym, hospitality lounge, and awesome festival folks all over!

Also in my future...some dessert while we catch up on old episodes of "Gossip Girl." Probably a few Newman's Own Ginger Hermits and a cup of tea. Have a great week everyone!
