According to researchers, the key to staying young is keeping a healthy diet and exercising, but the main reason this is so is that proper diet and exercise reduce the actions of insulin in the brain. A team of researchers at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Children’s Hospital in Boston tested their theory on mice. Mutant mice that over-ate and even got fat and had diabetes symptoms still lived 18 percent longer than regular lab mice because they lacked a gene affecting insulin. While over-eating isn’t encouraged among humans, dieting and exercising contribute to keeping insulin levels low in the brain, which may lead to a longer life.
