Keeping a Clean House

Posted Feb 27 2014 7:23pm

Thursday has come and gone. I’ve been meaning to get up another blog post, but it’s been a crazy one over here. Olivia has been getting up before 7 for the past couple of weeks and then she’s only been napping around an hour. A couple weeks ago she was napping 2.5-3 hours, so this nap feels like nothing. The reality of me having to get a sitter a couple hours a week is setting in.

I have to do it so I can get work done, stay organized and most importantly stay sane.  I have been putting it off for a couple of reasons, but today I finally bit the bullet and started to make some phone calls. If you have any tips for hiring a sitter, I’d love to hear them!

Another thing I’ve been thinking about is keeping a clean and organized house. I’m obsessed with making the most of our time. I’m guilty of trying to cram in as much as possible on a given day too but my new thing is cleaning during the week, to have more time on the weekends. Our house isn’t big by any means, but we are lucky enough to have a play room. This allows one room to house the sort of mess. We do have toys that are in a small bin in the living room, but it’s just a couple of things.

For the past couple years we’ve been cleaning on the weekends, while Olivia has napped. Since her naps are getting shorter and now she only takes one, we’ve been trying out different cleaning schedules. Of course, now that she’s older we can clean when she’s awake, but I don’t love doing the floors and bathroom while she’s around. (Inevitably, she runs and slips on the wet floor.)

For the past two weeks, we’ve cleaned at night. With both of us doing it, it’s pretty quick…except the floors which always take awhile.

Tuesday: vacuumed upstairs bedrooms and basement (I vacuum living room daily)

Wednesday: dust furniture + sweep/steam clean/swiffer floors

Thursday: bathrooms

Daily: make our bed, kitchen (dishwasher, wash whatever doesn’t fit, wipe down counters), sweep kitchen & dining room, straight up

Deep cleaning things happen as needed on the weekends. Danny’s a huge fan of deep cleaning the kitchen whenever he gets a chance.  We also change sheets every other week on the weekends.

During the week I always straighten up towards the end of the day. For now I like that this frees up our weekends…and I’m sure I’ll like it even more when the weather is beautiful and we want to be at the beach early on the weekends. 10-15 minutes during the week really adds up.

I’d love to hear how other’s keep their house neat and clean. I’m not a neat freak, but I hate a messy house. One day when we are debt free I look forward to having someone else clean my house weekly!

I’m off to watch some bad reality tv and RELAX.
