I received a box of samples from two of my favorite companies last week – Kashi and Bear Naked granola. Hooray! I’ve already made a dent in this box of yummy, natural goodies – read on for my reviews.
Kashi Honey Almond Flax Granola Bar - I usually prefer the crunchy variety, but this one is a winner. I loved the big chunks of almond and the sweet, honey taste. Nutritionally, this bar is pretty amazing – 6 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber all packed in to 140 calories.
Bear Naked Peak Protein Granola – Although the name is a bit misleading (one serving actually only has 5 grams of protein), this is a yummy tasting granola. I enjoyed mixing it with vanilla yogurt.
Kashi Go Lean Crunchy Bar - the Go Lean Crunchy bars are not my favorite Kashi variety (they seem too small), but they’re certainly nutritious! They are described as crunchy, whole grain cereal dipped in chocolate. This bar had 5 grams of fiber and 11 grams of protein in 160 calories. And the taste surprised me – it was sweet & chocolately and perfect for an afternoon snack. I might buy this one again!
Kashi Go Lean Chewy Bar - this tasted just like a candy bar. I really enjoyed it! It had a ton of protein (13 grams) and fiber (6 grams) in 290 calories. Along with a cup of coffee and a piece of fruit, this kept me full all morning long.
Bear Naked Granola Bar – In my box of samples, I received 5 unmarked products the the words Tropical Fruit, Fruit & Nut, and Chocolate Cherry written on the front. Other than that, there was no further information, no description, and no brand name! Curiosity got the best of me and I broke into the Fruit & Nut variety over the weekend. At first I thought it was a Kashi bar prototype, but on first bite I realized it must be a Bear Naked granola bar. The bar was soft and pliable – bits of almond and oat crumbled easily in my mouth. The bar tasted like fruit & nut granola with some added honey to hold everything together. I liked this a lot! I’m not sure what the nutritionals are, but the bar was 1.9 oz and I would estimate it as having around ~250 calories with 2-4 grams of fiber and protein. Backpacker magazine recently reviewed this bar - hopefully it will be on store shelves soon!

I ate the bar when I got home. It was quite good, even though I’m not a huge fan of tropical fruit. It was a nice balance of sweet, sour, and savory, mmm.
Kashi 7 grain Pilaf – I think that this was the company’s founding recipe! This microwavable pouch (just add 2 Tbs water) contained 7 whole grains and sesame: oats, brown rice, rye, hard winter wheat, tritical, buckwheat, barley, and sesame seed. The taste was nutty and wholesome. I added a little butter to my pilaf because I thought it needed a little something extra. This side dish seems extrememly versatile – if you added some cooked fruit, it would make a warm, comforting winter breakfast. A 1 cup serving of pilaf has 220 calories, 7 grams of fiber, and 8 grams of protein. Nice job Kashi!
I served my pilaf with roasted summer squash and organic sweet italian chicken sauasage.
I love Bilinksi’s brand of chicken sausage! The only ingredients are: organic skinless chicken, water, sea salt, fennel seed, and black pepper.

If you couldn’t already tell, I’m a pretty big Kashi and Bear Naked fan :-) I took out my recycling today and nearly all of the cardboard was comprised of Kashi boxes….
