Juicing Couture

Posted Oct 28 2008 1:46am
You know those weeks when everything just seems to pile up, and no matter how much you get done you still are far from caught up? Yes, I'm having one of those weeks. With school, trying to organize a new home, and clean up the old house in order to get my security deposit back (which by the way is probably one of the WORST parts of moving I have decided), I am feeling a bit overwhelmed. Luckily for me, I know how to eat well and make sure I take care of myself with both excercise and nutrition even during stressful times. These times when you feel completely overwhelmed are the times when taking health often falls to the wayside, and yet ironically are probably the most important time to take care of yourself.

I will always say that food is meant to be enjoyed, and some of my favorite relaxing rituals are in the kitchen. That being said, there are many people who barely have time to microwave a lean cuisine, let alone chop a ton of veggies to cook. So how can we compensate? Well you busy people are in luck because last week at the American Dietetic Association's annual conference a study done by UC Davis was presented looking at ways that people can obtain the necessary amounts of veggies a day. It turns out drinking your greens (or carotenoids...) instead of just relying on eating them got the participants of this study that much closer to the recommended daily amount of vegetable intake, a category in which most Americans are lacking. Not only were intakes higher, but participants actually reported enjoying them, which as this article states is key for making lifelong dietary changes and commitments. Obviously if you don't enjoy what you are eating, you probably won't stick with it. Click here for the article.

I have been wanting a juicer, and this just escalates that desire. I wouldn't rely only on juicing my vegetables, but let's face it, I probably won't eat kale (extraordinary superfood ) every day, so making a juice concoction is the next best thing. Why not try supplementing your veggie intake with juicing (and omega-3 if you add in your flax seed oil), or buying some organic carrot juice at the health food store? Just think of all the extra antioxidants and nutrients you can add in such a concentrated amount. I can't wait to try and as soon as I do I will share my favorite juicing treats with you.

Now go eat your veggies!
