when traveling (part 2 of It's almost impossible to eat organic). I went snowboarding at Dodge Ridge this weekend and realized how difficult it is to eat healthy when your out of your little bubble.
The continental breakfast wasn't too bad, but lunch on the sloops was chosing the lesser evil. The ski lodge offered the following for lunch:
- Cheese or chili nachos
- Chili
- Hamburgers
- Veggie burger
- Hotdogs
And everything came with a bag of chips. I ordered the veggie burger and told them to keep the chips.
After a full day on the sloops, we went back to the hotel to rest. We were not up to drive anywhere, so that limited us to ordering pizza or getting something at the gas station. The boys ate the left over pizza which I couldn't even look at after we saw one person have a heart attack on the slopes and heard about two others. I walked across the street to the gas station and had to turn my creativity up 10 fold.
I walked out of the gas station with pasta, tomato paste, and olive oil. We didn't have bowls in the hotel room, so I boiled water using the coffee pot, put the pasta in the water and let it sit until it was soft. Then I put the pasta on a plate with the tomato past and olive oil, nuked it for 25 seconds, and voila - pasta from a coffee machine.
The point here is that there are some options besides pizza. And if you have to turn to the pizza, get a vegetarian.
Solution for my next trip: Prepare healthy, organic meals that are easy to pack and re-heat in a microwave.
Mental note: Make sure the cabin/hotel has a microwave and a mini fridge.
