It all started with a cookie…

I’ve been gone from the blog for too long now due to travel.  Most of it was for business, but part of it was for pleasure and a little more special.   Those who have been following me since the summer will remember that in June a friend from work and I held a bake sale for MoveOn.org.  (You can find my posts about it herehere and here.)  It was a whirlwind experience involving 14+ hours of baking and 8 recipes.  It made me happy to be able to do something I love to benefit something I cared about equally.  I went on to become more involved in the campaign.  It marked the first time I had made phone calls for a cause (which is amazing when you consider I’m a bit phone-phobic), made a donation to a campaign, bought a campaign tee-shirt, and held a debate party.  Because of all this I was thrilled to be able to travel to DC for the inauguration with the co-worker who co-held the bake sale with me.  Even though we had to drive for hours to get there and wake up at 4:45 in the morning, even though I was freezing and so hungry I ate a hot dog and peanut M&M’s for breakfast, it was so worth it.  Above was our view of a Jumbotron (We were back by the Washington Monument) as photographed by my friend’s camera.  I try to keep this blog unpolitical since I intend it to be about my food and not my views.  However, since this trip was linked tangentially back to food through my bake sale I couldn’t not share.  Regardless of who the candidate is, I love the thought of his or her road to the White House being paved with cupcakes and brownies.

Now that I’m FINALLY back home again the kitchen is a disaster as always.  Since being back I’ve made 4 new recipes including a lovely Date Almond Power Shake from the fabulous Refresh cookbook and a large pot of Vegetarian Pho from this recipe from The Vegetarian Times.  For those who are unfamiliar with Pho, it is a Vietnamese noodle soup.  I love to get it when at Vietnamese restaurants so I was excited to finally make it at home.  Thanks to all the herbs and spices this Pho is really complex and quite delicious.  I added even more veggies to make it more filling.  Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures because my camera still hasn’t been charged from my inauguration adventures, but it should be powered up and ready to go soon.
