Hungry Halfsie Hipster Hater

Posted Oct 07 2009 10:03pm
It's a freezing cold morning in San Francisco. The sun is out but there is a chill in the air, winter is definitely coming early. I'm full but hungry. I'm tired yet the large amount of caffeine I ingested is making it impossible for me to sit still. I have Aikido in an hour...being slammed into the ground might be the wake-up call I need.

Getting back into training is a great feeling both physically and mentally. I can honestly say that martial arts have done more for my mental and physical health than anything else I have ever done. Paring martial arts with a lot of walking, yoga, diving, body-boarding, cycling, running, and a primarily vegan diet has helped me to become the hardcore tanookie that I was never able to be in my younger years. For all the b.s. people give me about veggie and vegan diets being low in iron and protein, I am super happy to say that they are WRONG!!! At age 19, I was still eating fish and fowl and dairy and was borderline anemic. Now, I fill up on more veggies and fruits than ever before (note: I did not like most fruit for a loooong time) and my iron levels are fine and my blood is able to be given to anyone else who happens to be O+!

And, though I love the city, though I love Aikido, I MISS the ocean. It's a dull pain that persists every day that I am away from the islands. I've heard of this happening, I just didn't think it would happen to a born and raised San Franciscan. Yet, here I am in this fantastic place and all I can think about is putting on my suit and mask and fins and swimming out to sea.

Thank you UCB and Brown and NYU for rejecting my application for your graduate programs and allowing me to go to UH! Thank you so much! :)
