Hula hoop is the new fitness craze for 2010

Posted Feb 04 2010 3:00pm

Hula-hoopOh yesI’m talking about the hula hoop … the same kind of hula hoop you used to do for hours on end when you were a kid. And yesthe hula hoop is making a serious comeback as a fitness alternative for many people.

I could hula forever when I was a kidbut when I tried it again last year as fitness alternative I found it quite more challenging as an adult than I remembered it to be when I was a kid.

A brilliant American company created the Hoopnotica Fitness Travel Hoop Combo hoop and they’ve literally created a new craze for something that was once associated with a childhood activity.

You seemost of the hula hoops you’ll buy in stores like Wal-Mart are made for kids and the ring size is small. Hoopnotica has designed adult size hoops and people all over America have been hooping.

I meaneven First Lady Michelle Obama has been photographed hula hooping last summer! Hula hooping can release the inner child in you while firming your entire body.

Hula hoop is so popular that with a little bit of research you’ll find hula hoop classes in major cities such as New York and L.A.

>>> Hula Hoop is quite deceivingly effective:

You might think it’s child’s playbut I can assure you that keeping that hoop in the air while swirling your hips is far more complicated as an adult than you think.

To do soyou are engaging muscles in your corelegsarmsback and all sorts of others small muscles you never think about.

Since hula hoop is all about co-ordinationyou’re not only getting a great body workoutbut you are also getting an incredible brain workout because you need a lot of concentration to keep that hoop in the air for a long period of time. According to Saharah Alia hula hoop instructor at the Crunch Gym in New York Cityyou need the same brain power when you hula hoop as you would when doing a crossword puzzle.

Don’t even think for a second that hula hoop is just about your hips. The new classes and the Hoopnotica videos show you how to use your legsarms and neck to swirl the hoop and in time you can get really sophisticated.

So how many calories can you actually burn with a hula hoop? Wellsurprisingly enoughyou can burn between 300-500 calories in a one hour session! If you are looking for a non-aggressive workout (aka not like fitness boxing)then hula hoop might be the exercise that gets you off the couch and into exercising again.

Here’s another thing to keep in mindif you are a busy mom and you have kidsyou can buy kiddie hula hoops for the little ones and get an adult hoop for yourself and go outside (during warmer months) and have fun as a family!
