i’m reading a book called the naked ape , by desmond morris. i’m in the chapter titled rearing right now (about child rearing) and came upon this interesting tidbit (emphasis mine):
The time taken to fall asleep in healthy males and females of all ages averages about twenty minutes. Waking should occur spontaneously. The need for an artificial awakening device indicates that there has been insufficient sleep, and the individual will suffer for it with reduced alertness during the waking period that follows.
it takes me about 5 minutes to fall asleep; it takes my husband a good 25. i almost never wake without an alarm clock (except on the weekends) and neither does he (not even on the weekends). i am probably perpetually sleep deprived though because i tend to sleep about 6-7 hours a night, except on weekends when i get a good 10. sleep is something i have not been prioritizing lately i suppose (i should). when i am sleeping enough i still fall asleep quickly but i wake more easily too.
