Why do you get the munchies?. When you are watching TV and suddenly get the munchies, are you craving food because you are board or because you are hungry? If you're just board, go for a stroll around the block, clean around the house or anything that is beneficial to your health and keeps you away from the kitchen. If you are hungry and really need to eat, have a small serving of fruits or veggies. Also, try eating a little later (around 6 or 7), so you won't be hungry later.
Brush your teeth!. One great tip that someone told me was to brush your teeth after dinner. That way you'll think you're done eating for the night. Another one is to turn the lights off in the kitchen (though I find it's not so hard to turn them back on :)
It's unavoidable.... but that doesn't mean you can't do something about it! When I'm hungry, I make sure I have plenty of fruit around to munch on. It's not exactly the same as a bag of chips but I love freshly cut watermelon or canteloupe on balmy summer evenings.
I know some people advise against this, but I also make dinner my heaviest meal of the day, so I'm seldom hungry afterwards. I also drink a lot of water in the evenings to flush out my system, and this contributes to the "full" feeling, which helps me get on with the evening without distractions.
Notice What's Great About the Snacking.. Everything we do, we do for very good reasons, including the things we wish we didn't do! What's great about the snacking? What's the upside? Perhaps it helps you relax, or feels like and over due indulgence. When you find the upside, then take a moment to appreciate that you want to do nice things for yourself.
Then find new behaviors that work even better than the old snacking. Scheduling true down time into your day, for example. What renews you?
It's possible to re-direct this energy very easily with hypnosis, so you might seek the help of a hypnotherapist to change this pattern.
TV could be the culprit. I love relaxing in front of the TV at night as much as the next person, but I often wonder about the effect that ads, or even the shows themselves, are having on my nighttime eating habits. When we see a burger or pizza on a commercial, or a TV show character eating it, there's a chance that it'll induce cravings for snacks at night. Perhaps look away from the commercials that feature snack foods, and use that time to get up and get a glass of water or piece of fruit.
Late Night Habits.... I think late night snacking is a habit more than anything. I think the theory is that you now associate watching TV at night with eating-- it supposedly takes 28 days to make a new habit. If you must snack, however, I would opt for veggies (lower in calories than fruit and they have more snack like crunch). If you are looking for something sweet try sugarfree popcycles (15 calories each) or diet jello (which tastes just like the real thing). Filling up on water is good, but for me that means I am up all night going potty! Good Luck and welcome to California!
