Holiday Health Tips

Posted Nov 30 2008 10:04am

They come earlier and earlier every year, toward the end of November now, the holiday tins of cookies, candies, and cakes  start coming and keep coming until new years. They are around the office,  they are at holiday parties, they are  in your dining and living room.

Become aware of these things. The classic tin of popcorn. The carmel corn has lots of fat and calories. One cup of the stuff  can be loaded with unwanted fat and calories. For about 6 weeks, you need to watch out and have a fat and sweet allowance. Visit mypyramid.govto find our what your daily cheat allowance andholiday suggestions.  Focus on smaller portions and the nuts. You need to get in the habit of thinking about just about every thing you put in your mouth for at least 6 out of 7 days out of the week.

It is a balancing act. The secret is learning how to balance your “energy in” and “energy out” over the long run.

“Energy in” is the calories from the foods and beverages you have each day. “Energy out” is the calories you burn for basic body functions and physical activity. -  Sugar can be one on the worst holiday culprits. Sugar works in the body by giving us a quick high, which results in a crashing low, taking our energy and vitality with it. Sugar depletes the body of vitamins and minerals and adds excess fat.

During this holiday season, just try to be aware of everything you are eating and try to make smart choices.
