I’m heading on a road trip late today to a country town a few hours from my home. I’ll reveal the why and share some fun details with you next week. I’m excited!
Of course, when you travel there is always the question of what to eat while in transit if you are trying to stick with clean and healthy food choices. Certainly plane food, gas station food and drive throughs just don’t cut it.
Even before I ate a purely wholefoods diet like I eat now, I struggled with travel food. I was rarely, if ever, one for packets of chips, chocolate bars and the golden arches. Just not my thing. I would load up with trail mix, wholegrain cereals to eat straight out of the box, wholegrain sandwiches, fruit, hummus and crackers, and other yummy choices like that.
Now my snack choices are a little different as they revolve around vegetables primarily rather than whole grains, but all of the above are still high quality choices. Before I show you what I’ll be taking with me, I have some ideas for travel snacks to share with you. Of course, these snacks won’t be right for everyone. Always consider your current diet and providing it works for you, then choose foods that are within that realm.
Ideally you want to focus on hydrating, alkaline foods as travel is extremely dehydrating and constipating for most people, as is the foods usually available. At the same time, if you are travelling across borders or countries, you will need to check out the laws on what foods you can bring in. A lot of the time raw foods are not allowed into new countries. You can however just take what you need for the journey and eat it all or throw any remaining food away upon arrival. Obviously you don’t need to worry about this for a local road trip.
The key is to be prepared and then you will be able to enjoy yummy travel-friendly snacks that keep you hydrated and satisfied while not sacrificing your health, energy and vitality. This is crucial. What’s the point in getting away for some rejuvenation time if you’re going to end up constipated, sluggish and heavy when you get there? It will take you a few days to feel back in balance and by that time your return journey might be waiting for you. No thanks!
Before I share the ideas I have for you, and what I’ll personally be taking, I want to call out to all my Perth and South West WA peeps. Here are some ideas for travel snacks:
- Fresh fruit – simple, easy, hydrating and delicious!
- Chopped vegetable crudités
- Frozen or fresh vegetable juice – fresh is great if you are on a road trip to sip along the way and frozen is great for plane rides where you can’t take liquids on board. You can also take frozen juices in your check in luggage for when you arrive. I have done this on trips to the US, UK, Bali and Ireland without any problems
- Smoothies, particularly green smoothies – these are wonderful for road trips in an easy to drink from bottle. You can keep it wrapped in an ice pack if you like
- Pure water – an essential!
- Nut or seed milks – only for road trips not plane rides. You can make your own or buy a high quality packaged option. They often come in little single serve sizes which are very convenient
- Coconut water – mmmm, so hydrating and delicious! One or two of these are so handy but again, not for most plane rides because of liquid regulations
- Whole avocados – if you buy one that is ripe but relatively firm it will travel well. Take a little sea salt and a spoon.
- Raw food snack bars – you want to be careful not to overeat these bars otherwise you will feel tired, heavy and constipated from the density of the bars. Enjoy one along with some lighter choices but avoid these if you have yeast overgrowth
- Sugar-free homemade raw snack bar – this is a better option if you have a yeast overgrowth or sugar sensitivity as it doesn’t contain any processed or natural sugars
- Trail mix of raw nuts, seeds and dried fruits (get organic trail mixes to avoid preservatives and colours in the dried fruit)
- Organic dried fruits – fresh dates are particularly yummy and more hydrating than dried fruits
- Olives – yum!
- Homemade or purchased salad – if you aren’t driving and can eat a salad, this is always a brilliant option
- Baked vegetables – only if you like them cold like I do (I’m a bit weird like that!)
- Raw cereals or whole grain cereals – you can take portions of these in a ziplock bag or take the whole bag! If you are someone who normally likes to munch a whole bag of chips, popcorn or other junk food, this is a fantastic higher quality option
- A sprouted grain bread sandwich with avocado, tomato, lettuce, sprouts and mustard
- Baked organic corn chips or whole grain crackers – again you don’t want to overeat these but always consider where you are coming from. If it is junk food this is a fabulous choice. If you eat very clean, mostly raw, then you’ll only want a little of these and to focus on the more hydrating options
- 70% plus dark chocolate or raw chocolate – for indulgence
- Carob or chocolate avocado pudding
This is just for starters. There are so many other options you could take with you when you travel, dependent on what’s available, where you are going and the regulations of your travel.
What I hope this has shown you is that you don’t need to reach for junk food to keep your appetite at bay when you are travelling and end up feeling like crap. There are many other yummy options if you have a little forethought and do a little planning.
I’ll be driving through the late afternoon and dinner, so I’ll be drinking plenty of water and green juice before I go, as always. I’ll be taking this with me:
Cucumber sticks (I often take baby cucumbers to eat whole too..yes that does get me a few looks from other drivers…
Raw olives
A whole avocado (I’ll probably just eat this when I get to my destination)
I put all the snacks and of course some pure water into my favourite cooler bag.
I got this as a gift a few years ago and I LOVE it. It always comes in handy and it’s the perfect size. I often take smoothies and juices in this bag for Alan and I when we go for day trips.
It’s only a 3 hour drive so I don’t need more than this. I’ll eat these snacks either during the drive or when I get to my destination. I find the lighter I eat on travelling days, the better I’ll feel the next day.
What do you take with you to eat when you travel? How does it leave you feeling?
Don’t forget to register for the talk in Busselton on 14th of May!
