Childhood obesity is not a subject to be taken lightly. We hear about it, read about it and now that we are all truly enlightened on this subject, what are we doing about it?
Obesity leads to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol even in young children. The National Institutes of Health state this generation of overweight children will have a lower life expectancy than today's adult. Are we looking forward to having a significant number of current overweight children grow into an adulthood filled with health problems and disability? I applaud Gov. Charlie Crist's interest in mandating physical activity for our schoolchildren with a curriculum on healthy eating.
Gov. Crist has proclaimed March as Nutrition Month. Floridians need to use this as a time to make changes in their dietary patterns to improve their health. There is no perfect diet and none of us eats perfectly -- including us nutritionists, who are human, too.
