Does anyone else pack a toaster when they are going out of town for the weekend?
We literally have a separate smaller travel toaster that we take with us when we are staying at condos. I also usually take foil and parchment paper and lots of ziploc bags. One time the doorman was helping us carry in our massive amount of bags and he saw the toaster and said "you can probably leave that in the car. All of the condos have toasters!" Not ones that work for us!
Whistler and Blackcomb are two side-by-side mountains which combined
offer over 200 marked runs, 8,171 acres of terrain, 16 alpine bowls and
three glaciers - plenty to wear out our gluten free family! They have also have this very, very cool Peak to Peak Gondola that connects the two mountains. It has the longest unsupported lift span in the world (3.024 kilometres or 1.88
miles) and it is the highest lift of its kind with an elevation of
435 metres/1,427 feet. Almost worth the trip up just to ride it.
Caramba Restaurante: We had lunch at Caramba Restaurante . They have an extensive gluten free menu that includes gluten free pizza and pasta. They were very knowledgeable about the steps necessary to avoid cross-contamination with the pizza pans and ingredients. The kids loved the pizza. They weren't as good on the salad ingredients. I ordered the Caramba Salad. It was marked gluten free but comes with Thai peanut dressing. Anytime something has a Thai peanut dressing you should confirm if it has soy sauce and if the soy sauce is GF. Luckily I asked because it did have soy sauce with wheat in it. I substituted for the standard balsamic vinaigrette but the salad was pretty awful - some almost white lettuce with some really gross gritty "chicken." Not impressive at all. Bottom line - go for the pizza but ask lots of questions and take a pass on the salad. This restaurant is in Whistler village beside the Delta Suites Hotel.
Gluten Free Pizza at Caramba! Restaurante
Quattro: We also ate dinner at Quattro
in the Village. A quaint Italian-themed
restaurant with a pretty extensive gluten free menu that includes gluten
free pasta. I talked to them at length and they seemed very knowledgeable
about how to avoid cross-contamination. They use separate cutting
boards in preparing the salads and cooked the pasta in clean water. We had a really lovely meal here - great hearty food after a day on
the slopes in a very warm and cozy setting with two fireplaces, open
kitchen, rich mahogany wood. They also have an extensive wine list
recognized by Wine Spectator as one of the worlds best. The girls had
caprese salads and pasta pomodoro. I had
the Quattro Sauce on my pasta - spicy and satisfying. Click HERE for a link to a video showing how to make the sauce - just
use GF pasta! This is a spicy red pepper and
garlic pasta - not for those who don't like strong flavor.
Roger's Chocolates: For an afternoon snack, visit Roger's Chocolates in the Village. Delicious handmade chocolates. They were very aware of allergies. Only a small handful of the chocolates were not gluten free.
Dusty's Bar and BBQ: If you are staying at Creekside, Dusty's Bar and BBQ at the bottom of the Creekside Gondola has a gluten free menu with yam fries and gluten free buns for their burgers. Can't think of a better place to hangout after a sunny day on the mountain with a cold drink (not beer unfortunately) and some hearty snacks!
On the Mountain - Whistler has pretty extensive gluten free mountain top options with many different places to eat at the top of the mountain and even GF burger buns! The Roundhouse Lodge on Whistler offers gluten free:
Tuscan Country Vegetable Soup
Roasted Vegetable Chipotle Chili
Gluten Free Buns for Burgers
Turkey and Ham Sandwich
Grilled Mushroom & Veg Sandwich
A Variety of Biscotti, Cookies & Chips
The mountain top dining areas can get pretty congested and I was not that confident in the lack of cross-contamination, so in the end we ate GF sandwiches that we carried in our pockets and snacked on some PJ's All Natural Beef Steak - my kids love this jerky! We did find some Wendel gluten free cookies at Fresh Tracks at the top of the Mountain.
