There are a plethora of nasties out there being marketed to us left, right and center in snack foods, processed foods, condiments, frozen meals, convenience foods and drinks and more. It’s harder today to find something that doesn’t contain a nasty ingredient than it is to find one that does. In fact, I’d estimate that 99% of foods that come in a package will contain something that with repeated intake will affect your health.
If you want to experience the best health you possibly can, here’s four “foods” that I recommend you ditch immediately. You will likely experience the benefit within days and certainly within weeks with a clearer head, more energy, more even moods and better skin tone.
1. Trans Fats
Take what seems to be a relatively benign liquid plant fat and process it into a solid fat and you have a health damaging trans fat. In addition to promoting cancer, trans fats raise your LDL (bad) cholesterol. Trans fats also occur naturally in beef, lamb and full-fat dairy products but the most common and harmful are the heavily processed vegetable oils found in most packaged products today. The foods that most commonly include trans fats are fried foods, margarine, fast foods, frozen meals, packaged snacks, crackers, cookies, doughnuts, muffins, pies, cakes, and processed meat products.
2. High Fructose Corn Syrup and White Sugar
If you have been educating yourself in healthy eating for a while now you’ve probably heard of the damaging effects of high fructose corn syrup and white sugar. While these are two different foods, they are worthy of including here together as they both are highly addictive sweeteners, appear in the ingredient list of the majority of packaged foods, contribute to weight gain and obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and many more health conditions. I am a big believer that if a food is as extremely addictive and triggers such intense cravings as white sugar and high fructose corn syrup do, then it is far better left out of your diet! Instead focus on healthier natural sweeteners like fresh and dried dates, dried fruits, fresh fruit, raw honey, pure maple syrup, coconut sugar and stevia.
3. MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)
You might know it as the concentrated salt flavor enhancer often used in Chinese food, but MSG is now used in a huge amount of processed food products available on our supermarket shelves and beyond. And while you might have been on the lookout for MSG in ingredient lists, you might not know that due to MSG’s link to severe migraines, companies have been using different names for MSG in their labels to hide that it is included. Names like autolyzed yeast, yeast extract, maltodextrin, hydrolyzed protein, sodium caseinate, mono-potassium glutamate, and textured protein. MSG not only causes headaches and migraines, but is linked to impaired liver and gallbladder function, digestive issues, autism and more. Scary stuff indeed and one to start avoiding right away! You can find MSG most often in foods like crisps and corn chips, packaged soups, salad dressings, deli meats, sauces, powdered flavor and seasonings packets and more.
4. Tap Water
Tap water today is not what it was 40 years ago, even 5 years ago. With each year that passes, more pollution and higher population, our tap water becomes even more toxic. Each time you have a tall glass from the faucet you can expect to ingest toxic heavy metals, chlorine, fluoride, pesticides, fungicides and many more nasties. If you are drinking a large amount of water each day to stay hydrated but you are putting in all these chemicals too….well, over time they will accumulate and health problems will arise.
