Everyone wants to get in better shape, but not everyone always knows where to start. Fitness can seem like a daunting task if you don’t know what you’re doing. Below are five easy steps that will have you on your way to being in the best possible shape.
(1) Do a mix of cardio and strength training. Cardio exercises – like walking, running, bike riding, etc. – are great for building up stamina and burning off calories. These get your heart pumping and temporarily increase the amount of calories you burn. Strength training will help you build muscle. The more muscle your body has, the more calories you’ll burn while at a rest. A good workout plan will incorporate both cardio and strength.
(2) Make sure you’re not over doing it. Your body is going to need time to rest and strengthen itself. If you’re doing strength training it’s recommended not to work the same muscle groups two days in a row. For example, either work out every other day, or do upper body one day and lower body the next, alternating every time. It takes your body about 24 hours to repair the damage done during exercise and to strengthen itself.
(3)Keep a journal of what you eat. This will help you monitor how much and what exactly you’re eating every day. To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you take in. So by keeping track of how much you’re eating, you can figure out what needs to be cut out or what you need to do to burn off those calories.
(4) Make sure what you are eating is nutritious. While it’s true that 2,000 calories of vegetables is the same to your body as 2,000 calories of fast food, it’s still not healthy. Nor will you be full from 2,000 calories of fast food. The less calories each item you eat is, the more you can eat. Plus, if you’re not eating the right foods, your body may not be getting all the vitamins and nutrients that it needs to function properly. And if you’re doing exercise, it’s important that you get all the proper nutrients so that your body needs to build muscle.
(5) If you really want to get in shape, try getting a friend to workout with you. By having a workout buddy , you’ll have someone to help keep you motivated and on track. A friend can challenge you and encourage you to push yourself and get the most out of each workout. Plus, a friend can hold you accountable and make sure you don’t skip a workout and that you’re eating healthy. It’s always easier to stay on track when you have someone there to remind you to do it.
These five little tips can be all you need to get in shape and start looking and feeling great. Remember that this isn’t everything there is to getting in shape, just the very basics. The best thing you can do is to get out there and start putting the advice to work!
