Farmers as Pharmacists? Doctors write prescriptions for fresh fruit & veggies.

Doctors have been telling us for years to eat our peas and carrots. Now, in an effort to fight obesity, doctors at three health centers in Massachusetts are writing “produce prescriptions,” vouchers for a dollar amount redeemable at local farmer’s markets. The goal: increase fresh food consumption among low-income families.
We like this idea for many reasons
1. Supports local farmers and allows them to compete with fast-food dollar menus.
2. Offer diversity in fresh-produce options for low-income families that don’t have the variety available to them.
3. Physician intervention is crucial in spreading the message about healthier eating.
