Ethiopian Food @ Red Sea Cafe

I had a really interesting meal tonight at the Red Sea Cafe.

It is a family-owned business that serves authentic Ethiopian food (at least I think it’s fairly authentic since I’ve been told that Ethiopians often eat here as well).

The menu is fairly simple.  You have a choice between lamb, beef and vegetable entrees. And for those of us that are greedy, there is the combo deal in which you get to pick one meat and one vegetable.

I chose cardamom spiced beef along with spiced okra. Both were heavily seasoned with spices and had very bold flavours. Although the appearances are not very appealing, the flavours definitely do not disappoint.

The beef had nice heat that was quite warming, added a nice punch but not overwhelmingly powerful. The okra dish was also very well made; if I hadn’t ordered it myself, I wouldn’t have guessed it was okra. It didn’t have the signature sliminess of okra and instead, it was tender and just melts in the mouth very easy. I really wished there was more okra…

One thing really unique about Ethiopian food is that you do not eat it with cutlery. Instead, you eat with your hands!

The injera bread, by itself, has a sharp sour flavour to it but once you pair it with the food, the combination works.

Overall, I had a really satisfying meal tonight. It was not only a tasty meal but quite a out-of-my-comfort zone experience. Very memorable!

If there is anything to really complain about (which there isn’t since everything was tasty), it would be the fact that they do not have any desserts!

If only there was dessert to end this delicious meal, then it would be perfect…
