Foods like chocolate, nuts, gelatin, and coffee contain the nutrient arginine, which can contribute to flare-ups that help cold sore viruses replicate and gain strength. But dairy products, beets, avocados, mangoes, pears, apples, fish, and poultry are all lysine-rich, which helps to suppress viral replication and prevent future cold sores.
