Eating Out- strategies to finding a healthy dish

Posted Feb 01 2011 7:02pm
Eating out is always a fun, social, convenient, and sometimes unhealthy habit. In order to make the best choices, some background information is key. Menu descriptions can tell us a lot about whether an entree may be healthy or....not so healthy.

In order to find healthy items, look for the following:
Boiled, baked, steamed, grilled, poached, "garden fresh,""in its own juice." Try to steer away from fried, sauteed, buttered, in-butter sauce, pan-fried, crispy/crunchy, gravies, tempura (means fried), creamed, in cream sauce, au gratin (means "with cheese"), and basted. These terms typically mean high in fat and can be pretty greasy.
I have outlined some ordering strategies below:When ordering beverages- water, or unsweet teas are usually safe in restaurants
Appetizers: Ordering an appetizer along with a side salad or soup can complete a meal and allow for it to be cheaper than an entree.
Bread: Ask for it to be served either with your meal or not at all. Bread baskets can be a nightmare when trying to lose weight or just eat healthier.
Entree: Choose a lean protein like chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef (filet mignon or top sirloin) or a vegetarian option. Pair with vegetable sides.
Salad: Ask for dressing on the side and order a vinegar based dressing (balsamic vinaigrette, italian, etc.) and not a cream based (ranch, honey mustard, 1000 island, bleu cheese). Careful of croutons, tortilla strips, cheese, breadsticks, nuts, and dried fruit (high in sugar and calories). Eat them and enjoy them- just try not to overdo it.
Tip: Some restaurants offer "Lighter" menus.Chili's: Guiltless Grill SectionApplebee's: Entree's under 550 calories sectionOlive Garden: Garden Fare menuCalifornia Pizza Kitchen: Small cravings menuRomano's Macaroni Grill: Recently revamped their menu and now offer meals lower in calories and fat.

Tip: Order the kids meal! Want a portion controlled size? I did this tonight for dinner and it was amazing! 2 chicken fingers and french fries for a kid, just the right portion to meet my needs! This tip is not for the timid due to the looks you might get from waiters. :)
